Two Champions Crowned at the State Meet

Jess Eason was the first Hornet to be crowned State Champion at the MIAA State Meet yesterday.  Jess threw 39'9.5 to beat the competition by 2 feet for the state title.  Kristen McDonagh may be the most clutch jumper in the nation as she skied over 5'7 to put the pressure on her state rival Moira Cronin.  McDonagh won the event at 5'7 and will be heading to the New England meet looking to clear 5'10.  Jen Esposito rewrote her record in the 400 hurdles (61.65) with a late charge down the final straightaway for runner-up honors. Cassie Olson made a late charge down the final straightaway to just nudge out Melanie Fineman from Newton South for a sixth place.  Nina Monestime and Kayla Comer would place 8th in their events to give the Hornets a 3rd place team placement with 33 points.

DII CHAMPIONS
For the second straight year Mansfield came home with the DII Title.  Two senior Captains led the way with outstanding performances.  Nina was first up in the jumping events.  It didn't matter that these were the worse jumping pits in the state.  She was determined to jump far and bring home the win.  Nina soared to 36'6 in the triple for the win and followed it up with a 3rd place finish in the long jump with a leap of 16'2.   Cassie Olson and Millie Chapman from Beverly turned the two mile into a two person race within the 1st 200 meters of the race.   Cassie would bring home runner up honors in the two with a new school record time of 11:02.85.  Senior Jess Eason brought home a 1st pace in the shot put with her state leading throw of 39'8.5.  Sophomore Jen Esposito had an amazing day as she won the 400 hurdles (63.6) and placed 4th in the triple jump with a leap of 34'7.5.  She would also team up with Kayla Comer, Julia Jones, and Emily Broyles for a 1st place finish in the 4x400.  Kayla Comer and Emily Broyles picked up some important points in the sprints!  Kristen McDonagh brought home the HJ title with a leap of 5'4 and placed 4th in the 100 hurdles with a time of 15.62.  She would later team up with Laura McHugh, Paige Grimes, and Nina Monestime for a 6th place finish in the 4x100.  Colleen Copley also placed 6th in the HJ.  The Hornets will be going after the State title this Saturday!
